In the USA, ibogaine is a Schedule I substance. Countries such as France, Belgium, Sweden, Denmark, Poland, Croatia and Switzerland restrict it. Gabon treats iboga as protected cultural heritage and has restricted exports.

Description
Tabernanthe iboga is an evergreen shrub from the rainforests of West and Central Africa, usually growing to about 2 metres and occasionally up to 10 metres. It bears narrow dark-green leaves, yellowish-white to pink flowers, and orange fruits at maturity. The yellowish roots, and especially the root bark, contain indole alkaloids, primarily ibogaine. In high doses the plant is strongly psychoactive and hallucinogenic. It is the subject of pharmacological research, particularly concerning substance use disorders.

In the Bwiti tradition of Gabon, Cameroon and the Republic of the Congo, the root bark is taken as a sacrament during initiation and rites of passage. Gabon declared iboga a national cultural treasure in 2000. Ethnobotanical information only.

The alkaloid ibogaine has been studied since the 1990s for possible effects against opioid dependence. Human evidence is limited (case reports, animal studies); controlled proof of efficacy is largely lacking.
