Primrose family (Primulaceae)
Description
Primula veris, the cowslip, common cowslip, or cowslip primrose, is a herbaceous perennial flowering plant in the primrose family Primulaceae. The species is native throughout most of temperate Europe and western Asia, and although absent from more northerly areas including much of northwest Scotland, it reappears in northernmost Sutherland and Orkney and in Scandinavia. This species frequently hybridizes with other Primulas such as the common primrose Primula vulgaris to form false oxlip which is often confused with true oxlip, a much rarer plant.
🌿 Risk of confusion — read before wild-harvesting!
In wild collection there is a risk of confusion with Primula elatior (oxlip, also EMA-recognised) and the non-medicinal Primula vulgaris.
- TeaRootInternalEMA well-established
Classic expectorant root tea: triterpene saponins act reflexively as a secretolytic, easing expectoration of viscous bronchial mucus.
Preparation & dosage
Pour 150 ml cold water over 0.2-0.5 g of finely cut dried primula root, bring to a boil, steep for 5 minutes and strain. Drink 3-4 cups daily, always after meals (to reduce saponin-related gastric irritation). Limit use to 2 weeks; for cough associated with cold.
- Dry amount
- 0.2–0.5 g
- Doses per day
- 3×
- Max duration
- 2 weeks
⚠ Age restriction: ≥ 12 years — Per EMA-HMPC monograph, use only in adults and adolescents from 12 years; not recommended for children under 12 due to lack of data.
