Mallow family (Malvaceae)
Description
Hibiscus sabdariffa is an annual plant of the mallow family, grown in tropical and subtropical regions. The parts used are mainly the red, fleshy calyces that mature after flowering. They are used to brew a tart, deep-red infusion drunk worldwide as a refreshing tea. The red colour and sour taste come from anthocyanins and organic acids. In clinical studies, its effect on blood pressure has been the main focus.

Meta-analyses of clinical trials found a mild reduction mainly in systolic (upper) blood pressure, most pronounced with elevated baseline values. The evidence base is limited and is not a substitute for medical treatment.
