Description
Elettaria cardamomum is a perennial herbaceous plant in the ginger family, native to southern India and cultivated in tropical regions. The plant grows roughly 2–4 metres tall and produces three-sided, yellowish-green pods containing several dark seeds. The dried pods and seeds are used mainly as a spice in Indian and Asian cuisine and to flavour coffee and tea. In traditional medicine, cardamom has been used for digestive complaints.
