Tea family (Theaceae)

Description

Camellia sinensis is an evergreen shrub or small tree with leathery, glossy dark-green, serrated leaves. All true teas (green, black, white, oolong) come from this species; the differences arise from how the leaves are processed. The leaves contain caffeine as well as polyphenols, especially catechins. As a beverage, tea is consumed worldwide and has been used for centuries.

The leaves are rich in catechins (especially EGCG) with antioxidant properties in the lab. Studies suggest a modest reduction in cholesterol; a proven health benefit in humans is not established.
