Moringa
CautionMoringa (Meerrettichbaum) · (Moringa oleifera)
Moringa family (Moringaceae)
Description
Moringa oleifera is a fast-growing tree native to South Asia and now cultivated across many tropical regions. Its leaves contain protein, vitamins, minerals and plant compounds and have traditionally been used as food. In recent years moringa has been heavily marketed as a "superfood," often with sweeping health claims. The human evidence, however, is limited: only a few mostly small trials exist, chiefly on blood sugar and blood lipids.
- RawLeafInternalTraditional use
The leaves are traditionally eaten as a nutritious vegetable and as dried powder, providing protein, vitamins and minerals.
- RawLeafInternalClinical trial
A few small human trials suggest modest reductions in blood sugar and blood lipids, but the evidence is limited and inconsistent and a proven benefit is not established.
