Myrtle family (Myrtaceae)
Description
Eucalyptus globulus is a fast-growing, evergreen tree of the myrtle family, native to Australia (Tasmania). Its leaves contain an essential oil whose main component is 1,8-cineole (eucalyptol). In Europe, eucalyptus oil preparations are registered as traditional herbal medicinal products for the relief of cough associated with colds and, applied externally, for localised muscle pain. The evidence rests largely on long-standing traditional use; for 1,8-cineole some clinical studies also exist.
